IPL 2023: What We Know So Far

Are you getting excited for this year's IPL season? Sit tight as we reveal everything we know so far and give you the rundown on this year's rules, players attending, and all the key points to have in mind.

The matches will be held in India

This year's organizer is none other than the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the action is going to be taking place in India. Noteworthy venues include:

- Wankhede Stadium

- Eden Gardens

- Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium

- Narendra Modi Stadium

- Brabourne - CCI

- DIY Patil Stadium

The action begins on the 20th of March

2023's rendition of IPL will kick off on the 20th of March 2023 and the final match will be played on the 1st of June 2023. Note that there might be slight shifts in the schedule to accommodate any last minute changes. In general, however, it's safe to say that things will be set in motion somewhere around the end of March.

The IPL 2023 rules

Just like any other game, cricket has its own rules. As the team managers scour the field to sign the best players the industry has to offer, they will look at their past performances in conjunction with what the current year's rules allow for.

First, we have the Right to Match Card (or RTM for short). In essence, it's a tool that allows the team manager to buy their players back. If they can offer one of their ex-players a good deal as they bid against the competition, it's a good way to bulk up the team.

As for the player changes, nothing is set in stone until the list is finalized and sent to the IPL governing Council.

The Impact Player changes

One key rule to note is that the Impact Player, a substitute that may be called in to bat and bow, can only be from India. The only exception would be if there are less than 4 overseas players on the team's starting XI.

According to the IPL officials, this is bound to expand the game's tactical possibilities. As per the new rule, the team manager will now be able to call in a substitute to participate in the game, having an equal role to any other regular player on the team. Any of the 4 listed substitutes can play the role of the team's designated Impact Player.

There is a predetermined timeframe of when the Impact Player can be brought in. This can be:

- At the end of an over

- Before the inning starts

- When a batter retires

- At the fall of a wicket

The player that leaves the playing field will no longer be a part of the ongoing match. Keep in mind that the new rule does not change the total number of batters in an IPL game, the number of which is limited to 11.
